Doing one thing and thinking about the other thing is a form of fear management and similar to the fight and flight response of our body system, it disrupts the digestion process which triggers the IBS.
Irritable bowel syndrome is a disorder where our stomach is not completely clear or we need to clear it 2 to 3 times a day or even more.
In IBS, sometimes we have trouble passing stool which gives a feel of constipation however it is different as constipation is characterised as hard and dry stool difficult to pass with very few bowel moments normally less than three per week.
Further in IBS, we are going to fresh ourselves many times a day which gives a feeling of diarrhoea however it is different as in case of diarrhoea we have loose watery stool which is quite frequent normally more than 3 times a day.
The people having the disorder of IBS are not comfortable at the workplace due to stomach problems such as gas or boil movement. Even more, they Found difficulty in going out with a fear of motion during the journey.
There are a few things we need to know to understand the problem
The first thing is peristalsis, it is muscle contraction, to move the food through the digestive tract. These contractions should be normal means neither strong nor weak. A strong contraction results in gas and diarrhoea problems while weak contractions lead to hard stool and Constipation. The peristalsis process is controlled by the enteric nervous system which communicates and interact with the central nervous system.
The second thing is coordination between the brain and intestine.
The intestine is connected to the brain using hormones and nerve signals. Poor coordination between the brain and intestine causes the body to overreact to the changes that normally occur in the digestive process. The nerves become more active during stress which causes the intestine to be more sensitive and contact more
The most important part is stress. Let us understand it through the flight and fight response of our body system first. Suppose we are resting after a meal and see a fire in our house. Now extinguishing the fire will become our priority work and the body will focus to fight this event. Sleep, digestion and other body processes will stop as it is not the priority. In case of fight or flight response body moves the blood away from the digestive system and bring it to the muscles to do the needful. In this case, the stress hormones cortisol is released to make the body alert
Now Fear in its subtle form is available in stress, confusion,
hurry, tension, restlessness,
working unwillingly etc and it shows itself by doing one thing and thinking about the other thing. In such cases, the body does not digest properly. The mind, as well as the body or bowel, is irritated.
For example
if I’m talking to a family member or friend but my mind is engaged in some important assignment to be submitted the next day urgently in the office. Then what am I doing? Talking or thinking about the assignment.
or say I have committed to join someone at someplace in a particular time and I’m stuck in traffic or somewhere else. Now, what am I doing? Driving or fighting the stress of meeting.
Simply, if I am taking food and watching a movie at the same time, one must be less important, perhaps food because, it is being done only to fulfil the social obligation.
Isn’t it?
Our life is full of such events throughout the day and we are having irritated mind and body quite frequently.
We should align our actions and thought to overcome fear, confusion, worry, restlessness etc. Set the priority and focus on every work, take rest at regular intervals, Take deep breathing to release stress, monitor the food intake and physical activity to keep them in harmony, walk at regular intervals and exercise
let me conclude the topic with a very important point, watch your thoughts, what action they demand? choose the right action and make a to-do list, complete them with the plan and focus believe me it will remove irritation from your mind and your body.
